Rusty Coat

I ONCE DID a field planting of seeds from about ten named russet varieties and the fruiting produced ten apples divergent in appearance, some with minimal russeting and a few with very heavy coating. It would have been appropriate for me to call each of them Rusty Coat since this is essentially a generic name for russeted apples.

OTHER NAMES None

HISTORY The date and place of origin is unknown. The name Rusty Coat has been attributed to a number of other known russeted varieties either when the name was forgotten or because it became a generic term for any apple with dominating russet on the skin.

EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION This type of apple presents various degrees of skin coating with different textures of russet. The size and shape also fluctuate.

INTERIOR DESCRIPTION It generally has whitish-yellow flesh that is crisp and dry with a sweet-tart flavor; after long storage, the apple becomes more sweet than tart.

TREE CHARACTERISTICS Tree habit is similar to Roxbury Russet, Pomme Gris, and Golden Russet. It bears full crops and the limbs will be heavy, unless pruned.
